September Talk: Nicholas Watts MBE – Farming and Wildlife at Vine House Farm
Nicholas Watts farms 2500 acres in Lincolnshire at Vine House Farm and has set up Vine House Birdfoods now one of the biggest suppliers of bird food in the UK. His talk will cover the history of the farm and what he has done to help increase wildlife while continuing to grow food.
Nicholas was made an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in 2006. He was given the honour for his services to farming and conservation in Lincolnshire. He has also donated over £2,000,000.00 to the Wildlife Trusts and now is an important supporter of The British Trust for Ornithology. Nicholas started recording the breeding birds on his farm in 1982. In 1992 he realised there had been a large decline of some species, this worried him so he decided to try and stop this decline and by chance Vine House Bird foods was created. Since 1992 there has been extensive habitat creation at Vine House Farm and Nicholas has won more awards for conservation on his farm than any other farmer in the UK.
